The 5 month Ski Fitness programme has been developed mainly over 12 years of training people for one-off trips and my own training for similar one-off trips. Any more skiing is a bonus but most people have one big one they need to get fit for. This brings its challenges because you have to prepare your body for an all-out assault on muscles that have been dormant since last year.

You also do not know the conditions, the group dynamics or the ratio of walking:skiing. You must train yourself to be able to cope with anything and more. You will then be the fittest of the group and be able to enjoy yourself the most.

I’ve just returned from 10 days of consecutive skiing in seven different resorts. After following the 5 month Ski Fitness programme with its six phases I was very pleased with my standard of fitness. It is very important for me to practice what I preach and to show you that some of the non-traditional approaches in the programme really work. As Paul Chek generously quotes for my book “…knowing the author is not a cut-n-paste expert, or an academic, but is a tried and tested athlete with authentic wisdom to share.”

Trip Fact File

Resorts: Argentiere, Le Tour, Courmayeur, Alagna, Gressoney, Champoluc, Les Contamines

Snow conditions: ice, slush, chopped powder, off-piste moguled itinerarys, skinning, bootpacking, rope accessed couloirs, wind blown crud & finally lift accessed powder!

Accommodation: 2 nights driving/sleeping in a campervan, 2 nights in lift station carparks (Argentiere & Courmayeur) in the campervan, 7 nights in Hotel Mirella in Alagna

Group: mountain guide for 6 days in a group of 5 and two of us for the other 4 days.

Specialist equipment: Campervan with heater, snow tyres & chains, Whitedot Preacher off-piste skis, skins, Black Diamond hike-n-ride boots, ABS backpack, transceiver, shovel, probe, harness & protein snacks.
